This framed brass rubbing depicts October from the medieval Labors of the Months cycle, a traditional subject found on English church brasses illustrating seasonal agricultural life. The imagery—figures harvesting and preparing fields alongside symbolic roundels—derives from medieval English monumental brasses, most commonly found in parish churches throughout eastern England.
This example is a mid-20th-century rubbing, likely created circa 1930s–1960s, during a period when brass rubbing was a popular antiquarian and academic pursuit. It was taken directly from an earlier medieval brass and executed on machine-made paper, then mounted and framed for decorative display. The gilt wood frame complements traditional, Tudor Revival, Gothic, and English country interiors.
